The Mortuary
Faction headquarters of the Heralds of Dust in the Hive Ward
What You Know
This is where you started. The Mortuary sits deep in the Hive Ward—a grim, imposing structure that processes Sigil’s dead. It’s run by the Heralds of Dust, a faction that believes life is just an illusion and true existence begins only in death. If that sounds unsettling, it’s because it is.
You woke up here with no clear memories of how you died or why you were tagged for processing. Your death certificates were incomplete, missing key information about your demise. That alone should’ve been strange, but in a place like the Mortuary, strangeness is the norm.
The basement levels were cold, clinical, and filled with the quiet efficiency of the Dustmen going about their work. You met Jex, a Herald of Dust remnant who was gruff but not overtly hostile. The Dustmen aren’t warm—they’ve moved past “mortal concerns” like empathy—but they weren’t trying to stop you from leaving, either. They were just… processing.
You also helped a creature named Thaeziagnuz while you were there, though the details are hazy. And then there was the crematorium incident. Most of you died. Again. In the very place meant to process the dead. The irony wasn’t lost on anyone, least of all Morte.
The Mortuary is a place you escaped, but it’s also where your story began. And in Sigil, beginnings and endings have a way of looping back on each other.
